The Water Jug Workout is an excellent alternative to dumbbells or kettlebells. Not only can you grab a gallon of water for under a dollar, Water Jugs are much easier to manage than traditional weights. Done working out and don’t feel like lugging around cannonballs? A gallon of water weighs roughly 8 lbs. For our workout, we used 1 and 3 gallon jugs. The 3 gallon jugs weigh in at roughly 24lbs and provide you with a great workout. We bought our heavy duty 3 gallon jugs for just under ten bucks. Too rich for your blood? You can just take a belt and strap some 1 gallon jugs together. This option will also let you increase your weight by 8 lbs with each set.
The Water Jug Workout provides you with a large variety of options. If you’d like a traditional workout consisting of standard exercises such as Farmer Squats or Front Delt Raises, they’re more than capable. If you’d like to emulate Kettlebells and do some explosive movements like the Snatch or Clean and Catch, they can do that too.
You can also improvise with other items laying around the house. Instead of a bench, we use a camping cooler. This opens the door for exercises such as Bench Press and Tricep Kickbacks.
